THE PROJECT
We prepared an in-depth industry report on the challenges faced by women changemakers in India, identifying strategies to support their leadership in driving social change.
THE CHALLENGE
Women in India who work to lead social change often face deeply entrenched gender-based barriers that intersect with caste, class and cultural expectations. These include the weight of family and domestic responsibilities, threats to personal safety, and systemic preferences for male leadership. Despite their determination and achievements, there is a lack of research, networks, and targeted support systems tailored to their lived realities - leaving many women isolated and under-resourced in their efforts to lead change.
THE SOLUTION
We conducted in-depth interviews with women leaders in India and supplemented this with a review of relevant academic and industry research. The goal was to uncover both the barriers these women face and the strategies they use to overcome them. The insights informed a set of recommendations to guide the development of a peer-driven support network, contextualised leadership training, and mentoring opportunities. These programs would focus on both practical skill development and personal resilience.
THE RESULTS
The report, Women Who Change the World: Equipping India’s future changemakers, offered critical insights into the experiences of women changemakers in India and provided a roadmap for establishing a locally grounded, women-led support network.
Key recommendations included engaging local women as champions and co-designers of programs, fostering peer and mentor relationships, and delivering tailored training that integrates both hard and soft leadership skills.
